Radhanagari Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 1985, is one of Maharashtra’s oldest protected reserves, located in the Western Ghats near Kolhapur. It was specially created for the conservation of the Indian bison (Gaur) and spans over 350 sq. km of dense forest, grasslands, and hilly terrain. The sanctuary is home to diverse wildlife including leopards, sloth bears, deer, and over 260 bird species. At its heart lies the scenic Radhanagari Dam, which plays a vital role in maintaining the forest ecosystem. Recognized as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site buffer zone, Radhanagari supports rich flora and fauna and serves as a key biodiversity hotspot.
